Double Deep

General Description

It's the most economic form of higher density pallet storage. It's usually arranged in a multiple of double deep and double deep back-to-back rows separated by forklift access aisles (right angle stacking). Pick faces are reduced, because pallets are stored behind one another.

Application

Typically used for higher density storage when stockholdings include multiple pallets of the same item and random access to SKUs isn't required.

Attributes

  • Approximately the same capital cost per pallet position as selective rack 1
  • Increased density compared to selective rack
  • Less flexible layout, although easily erected and adjusted
  • Occupancy averages 85% with competent inventory control and sufficient multiples of like items
  • Operator must remove front pallet in order to access rear
  • Requires bottom beam or straddle method
  • Requires deep reach style forklifts for storage and retrieval

1 Reference to straddle method as bottom beam method increases cost.
